New addition to European long distance triathlon is IRONMAN Tours 70.3 in France. Race begins with a 1.9km downstream swim in the River Cher. Athletes complete one loop in the river’s calm waters, with the current providing favourable conditions for fast swim times.
The 90km bike course takes athletes on a single loop through the Loire Valley region. Relatively flat terrain follows the River Cher’s banks, passing several historic châteaux. A highlight is the Château d’Ussé, renowned for inspiring Charles Perrault’s Sleeping Beauty. This French Renaissance castle features distinctive turrets that mark a significant point on the course.
The 21.1km run consists of two laps along the River Cher. Athletes traverse the Honoré de Balzac park, located on a manufactured island that’s connected to the mainland by a bridge. The flat course provides consistent terrain for maintaining pace throughout both laps.
In late May and early June, Tours typically experiences mild spring weather with average daytime temperatures ranging from 17°C to 22°C (63°F to 72°F). Morning temperatures race race start can possibly range between 12-15°C (54-59°F). The River Cher water temperature averages 16-18°C (61-64°F) during this period, making it wetsuit-legal for Ironman competitions.
Rainfall is common in the Loire Valley region, with an average of 8-10 rainy days per month. The area experiences moderate humidity levels around 65-75%. Wind conditions are generally moderate, averaging 10-15 km/h (6-9 mph), though occasional stronger gusts can occur along the river course.
